The Immortal and The Other Plays Reading Session at DKS CLUB

- Reflection of literary seminar North American Bengali Conference -

It was a privilege to engage with esteemed personalities in the field and to share insights on chosen topics, which centered on the implications of short stories in modern society, particularly through the lens of renowned writers such as Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, and Tara Shankar Bandopadhyay. In our presentation, we focused on how these literary figures addressed the theme of discrimination—highlighting the divides between the powerful and powerless, as well as issues surrounding gender and caste. Their narratives serve as compelling reminders that we must confront discrimination in all its forms and strive for equality, a cause that remains strikingly pertinent in contemporary society.

Another significant topic we addressed was the evolving role of young mothers in today’s world. Undoubtedly, the challenges of motherhood are vast, yet it is crucial to broaden the discussion to encompass parenthood as a whole. In an era that champions equality, the pivotal role that fathers play in nurturing their children cannot be overlooked. Parenthood embodies a beautiful blend of joy, challenges, and immense responsibility, especially when it comes to instilling empathy in the next generation.

Conferences like these are unique platforms where NRIs come together to celebrate our rich culture and heritage. We were delighted to participate alongside fellow Bengalis and Indians from various walks of life across the USA and Canada. The sight of second and third-generation NRIs—many of whom may struggle with reading or writing in Bengali—taking the initiative to engage in cultural programs and manage significant events was truly heartening. Their commitment to organizing such large-scale gatherings, accommodating thousands of attendees, is a testament to their dedication to our community.
